HOW TO PLANT JALAPEĂ‘OS
Jalapeños love warmth and sunshine, making January the perfect time to start them indoors. Begin by filling small pots or seed trays with fine, free draining compost and gently firming the surface. Sow one or two seeds per pot, planting them about 0.5–1 cm deep, then lightly cover with compost and water gently to settle the soil.
Place your pots somewhere warm and bright, jalapeños germinate best at 20–25°C, so a heated propagator or a consistently warm windowsill works well. Keep the compost moist but not soggy. Seedlings usually appear within 7–14 days. Once they’ve developed their first true leaves, thin to the strongest plant per pot and begin potting on as they grow.
As the plants develop, ensure they receive plenty of light and warmth to prevent legginess. Jalapeños can be moved into a greenhouse or sunny, sheltered outdoor spot once all risk of frost has passed.
