WHAT’S INSIDE THE JULY GROW KIT
July is a month of abundance in the garden. Beds are full, harvests are rolling in and it’s the perfect time to keep sowing for fresh crops that will carry you through late summer and into autumn.

BEETROOT
Beetroot is a rewarding vegetables to grow, offering both vibrant roots and nutritious leafy tops that can be enjoyed in the kitchen. Sweet, earthy and packed with goodness, it’s a reliable crop that thrives throughout summer and delivers satisfying harvests with very little fuss.
Easy to grow and wonderfully versatile, beetroot performs beautifully in raised beds, garden pots and deep containers, making it suitable for almost any growing setup. Beneath the soil, the roots slowly swell and develop their rich colour, creating that satisfying moment of harvest when you finally lift them from the ground.
One of beetroot’s greatest strengths is its versatility. The roots can be roasted, pickled, grated into salads or enjoyed fresh, while the tender young leaves can be cooked much like spinach. Homegrown beetroot offers exceptional flavour and freshness that’s hard to beat.
Fast growing AND beginner friendly, beetroot is an excellent crop for succession sowing, allowing you to enjoy regular harvests throughout the season. With little maintenance and big rewards, it’s a fantastic addition to any summer grow kit.
HOW TO SOW AND GROW BEETROOT
Step 1: Choose Your Growing Spot
Beetroot grows best in a sunny position with well drained, fertile soil. If growing in containers, choose a pot that is at least 20–25cm deep to allow roots to develop properly.
Step 2: Prepare the Soil
Loosen the soil and remove any stones or large clumps, as these can affect root growth. Mix in compost or organic matter to improve drainage and add nutrients.
Step 3: Sow the Seeds
Sow beetroot seeds directly where they will grow. Make shallow drills around 2cm deep and space them roughly 30cm apart. Sow seeds thinly along the row and lightly cover with soil.
Step 4: Water Gently
Water the area carefully after sowing to settle the soil. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells, but avoid overwatering.
Step 5: Thin the Seedlings
Seedlings usually appear within 7–14 days. Once they are a few centimetres tall, thin them out to leave around 8–10cm between plants. This gives roots plenty of space to swell.
Step 6: Keep Growing Strong
Keep the area weed free and water regularly to encourage even growth. Consistent watering helps prevent woody or tough roots.
Step 7: Harvest
Beetroot is usually ready to harvest in 8–12 weeks. Harvest when roots reach golf ball to tennis ball size for the sweetest flavour. Gently lift from the soil and enjoy fresh.
For a continuous harvest, sow little and often every few weeks throughout the growing season.
