WHAT’S INSIDE THE JULY GROW KIT

July is a month of abundance in the garden. Beds are flourishing, harvest baskets are filling up and there’s still plenty of time to sow fresh crops that will keep your kitchen stocked well into late summer and autumn.
This month’s Grow Kit brings together Chinese Cabbage, Beetroot and Butterhead Lettuce a trio chosen for crisp flavours, reliable growth and continuous harvests.
This week we're talking about Butterhead Lettuce, one of the easiest leafy crops you can grow. With its soft, tender leaves and delicate, sweet flavour, it's perfect for fresh summer salads, sandwiches and wraps. Quick to establish and ideal for succession sowing, butterhead lettuce provides a steady supply of homegrown leaves throughout the season.
Whether you're growing in containers, raised beds or a traditional vegetable patch, butterhead lettuce thrives with very little effort.

BUTTERHEAD LETTUCE
This beautiful lettuce forms loose, compact heads with crisp outer leaves and a soft buttery centre, making it perfect for fresh salads, wraps and sandwiches. Its mild flavour pairs effortlessly with countless dishes, bringing freshness and homegrown goodness straight to your plate.
Butterhead Lettuce grows particularly well in raised beds, containers and smaller growing spaces, making it ideal for patios, balconies and kitchen gardens alike. It’s fast-growing and thrives with regular watering, especially during warmer weather.
One of the best things about growing lettuce is how quickly you can enjoy the rewards. Harvest outer leaves as needed for a cut-and-come-again crop, or allow full heads to develop for larger harvests. Regular sowing every few weeks will keep you supplied with fresh leaves throughout the season.
Simple, productive and full of flavour, Butterhead Lettuce is a must grow crop for fresh summer eating.

HOW TO SOW AND GROW BUTTERHEAD LETTUCE
Step 1: Choose Your Growing Spot
Butterhead lettuce grows best in a sunny or partially shaded position with fertile, well-drained soil. It thrives in raised beds, vegetable patches and containers, making it ideal for gardens of any size.
Step 2: Prepare the Soil
Loosen the soil and mix in plenty of compost or well rotted organic matter to improve moisture retention and provide nutrients. Rake the surface to create a fine, level seed bed.
Step 3: Sow the Seeds
Sow seeds thinly in shallow drills around 1cm deep, spacing rows approximately 30cm apart. Cover lightly with soil and gently firm the surface.
Step 4: Water Carefully
Water gently after sowing and keep the soil consistently moist throughout germination. Lettuce prefers evenly moist soil, especially during warm summer weather.
Step 5: Thin the Seedlings
Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them to around 20–25cm apart. This gives each plant enough space to develop into a full, healthy head.
Step 6: Keep Plants Growing
Water regularly during dry spells and keep the area free from weeds. Mulching around the plants can help retain moisture and keep roots cool during hot weather.
Step 7: Harvest
Harvest whole heads once they feel firm and have reached a good size, or pick the outer leaves as needed for a cut-and-come-again crop. Regular harvesting encourages fresh growth and extends your picking season.
For a continuous supply of crisp, homegrown lettuce, sow a small batch of seeds every two to three weeks throughout summer. Before long, you'll have fresh, delicious leaves ready to enjoy straight from your garden to your plate.
