HOW TO GROW PADRÓN PEPPERS
Padrón peppers love warmth and a long growing season, so starting them early indoors will give you the best results.
1. Sow Indoors
Fill small pots or seed trays with fine, free-draining compost and gently firm the surface. Sow seeds about 0.5–1 cm deep, cover lightly with compost and water gently.
Place pots somewhere warm, ideally 20–25°C. A heated propagator or warm, bright windowsill works perfectly. Germination usually takes 10–21 days, so be patient and keep the compost lightly moist, not soggy.
2. Grow On
Once seedlings appear, move them to the brightest spot possible to prevent them becoming leggy. When they develop their first true leaves, pot them on into larger containers. Continue keeping them warm and well watered.
3. Move to Their Final Spot
After the risk of frost has passed (usually late spring in the UK), transfer plants to a greenhouse or a sunny, sheltered outdoor position. They thrive in pots or grow bags with rich, well-drained compost.
4. Care & Harvest
Water regularly and feed weekly once flowers begin to form. Harvest peppers when they are small and green (around 5–7 cm long) for the classic Padrón flavour. The more you pick, the more they produce.
Mostly mild, occasionally fiery, that’s part of the fun!
