WHAT’S INSIDE THE SEPTEMBER GROW KIT

WHAT’S INSIDE THE SEPTEMBER MONTHLY GROW KIT?
September is a month of change in the garden. The days are beginning to shorten, temperatures are becoming cooler and some of our summer crops are starting to slow down. But that doesn’t mean the growing season is over. There are still plenty of opportunities to sow, grow and harvest fresh food throughout autumn.
This month’s Monthly Grow Kit brings together Rainbow Chard, Pak Choi and Radish, three crops chosen for their versatility, reliable growth and ability to make the most of the changing season.
Rainbow Chard brings beautiful colour to the garden with its vibrant stems and lush green leaves, while providing harvests that can continue well into autumn.
Whether you’re growing in pots, containers, raised beds or a traditional garden, these three crops are perfect for keeping your growing space productive as summer comes to an end.
Every Monthly Grow Kit includes carefully selected seeds, plant labels and easy-to-follow growing guides to help you grow confidently from seed to harvest. You can also customise your kit with our organic compost mix, biodegradable pots and recycled plastic saucers.
September is not the time to stop growing. It’s time to change what you grow.

RAINBOW CHARD
Rainbow Chard is both beautiful and productive, making it a fantastic addition to an autumn garden. The brightly coloured stems can range from pink and red to yellow and orange, standing out against the deep green leaves.
Once established, plants can provide repeated harvests. Instead of pulling up the whole plant, simply pick the larger outer leaves and leave the centre to continue growing.
Rainbow Chard is also wonderfully versatile in the kitchen. Young leaves can be eaten raw in salads while larger leaves can be cooked in the same way as spinach. The stems can be chopped and cooked or pickled separately or enjoyed alongside the leaves.
For smaller growing spaces, Rainbow Chard is an excellent option. It can thrive in containers as well as raised beds, provided the plants have enough room to develop.
With regular watering and harvesting, it can remain productive through autumn and potentially into winter, particularly when given some protection during particularly cold spells.

HOW TO SOW AND GROW RAINBOW CHARD
STEP 1: CHOOSE YOUR POSITION
Choose a sunny or partially shaded position with fertile, well drained soil. Rainbow Chard is happy in containers too.
STEP 2: PREPARE THE SOIL
Remove weeds and larger stones before loosening the soil. Add compost or well rotted organic matter to improve fertility and moisture retention.
STEP 3: SOW THE SEEDS
Create shallow drills around 2cm deep. Sow the seeds individually or in small groups, leaving around 30cm between rows.
STEP 4: COVER AND WATER
Cover the seeds with a light layer of soil and gently water. Keep the soil consistently moist while the seeds are germinating.
STEP 5: THIN THE SEEDLINGS
Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them so the strongest plants have enough room to develop. Aim for around 20–30cm between plants.
STEP 6: KEEP WATERED
Water regularly during dry weather, particularly while plants are establishing. Keeping the soil evenly moist will encourage healthy leaf growth.
STEP 7: HARVEST REGULARLY
Once the leaves are large enough to use, pick the outer leaves first. Avoid removing all the leaves at once. Regular harvesting encourages the plant to keep producing.
STEP 8: PROTECT FOR AUTUMN
As temperatures drop, consider protecting plants with fleece or growing them in a sheltered position. This can help extend your harvest into the colder months.
