Chive seeds
Soil/compost mix
Pots, containers, or a garden bed
General-purpose fertiliser
Step 1 – Sow Those Seeds (March - Sept)
Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep in pots or directly into beds from March to July. For an extended season, sow indoors from February or till September. Keep compost moist and place in a bright, sunny spot. Germination takes 10–14 days.
STEP 2 - WATCH THEM GROW
Keep soil moist but never soggy and feed every 3–4 weeks with Seed Folk fertiliser or a liquid feed. Snip away any yellow or faded leaves or flowers to keep the plant healthy and productive.
STEP 3 - HARVEST TIME
Snip leaves close to the base once they reach 15 cm tall. Cut little and often to encourage new growth.
TOP TIPS
Chives are perennial — they’ll die back in winter and return stronger in spring.
When your chives outgrow their pot, you can split the plant into two. Replant in separate pots for double the yield or gift one to a friend!
