Step 1 – Sow Those Seeds (ALL YEAR ROUND)

Sow seeds 0.5–1cm deep in pots, containers, or directly into garden beds from March to September. For year-round harvests, sow indoors on a bright windowsill or under grow lights from October to March. Scatter thinly, keep the soil evenly moist, and place in a sunny or part-shaded spot. Seeds usually germinate within 7–10 days.

STEP 2 - WATCH THEM GROW

Once seedlings appear, thin gradually to 10–15cm apart. Use the thinnings as baby leaves in salads. Keep soil evenly moist — lettuce hates drying out, which can cause it to turn bitter.

STEP 3 – KEEP THEM GROWING

Water regularly, especially in hot weather. Feed every 2–3 weeks with Seed Folk fertiliser or a general-purpose liquid feed for healthy, leafy growth.

STEP 4 – HARVEST TIME

Lettuce can be harvested as a “cut-and-come-again” crop or as fullheads. For a cut-and-come-again harvest, pick the outer leaves often to encourage new growth from the centre. For full heads, allow your lettuce to mature fully and cut the entire head at the base when it reaches your desired size.

Top Tip: For the best flavour harvest in the morning, when plants are at their juiciest.
