Thyme seeds
Soil/compost mix
Pots, containers, or a garden bed
General-purpose fertiliser
Step 1 – Sow Those Seeds (March - June)
Sow seeds thinly on the surface of moist compost — they need light to germinate, so don’t bury them. Press gently and mist with water. Place in a warm, bright spot. Germination takes 10–21 days.
STEP 2 - WATCH THEM GROW
Once seedlings are 2–3 cm tall, thin or transplant them 15 cm apart. Water sparingly — thyme dislikes soggy soil.
STEP 3 - KEEP THEM GROWING
Full sun is best indoors or out. South-facing windowsills are thyme’s happy place. Feed lightly every 6–8 weeks with Seed Folk fertiliser or a liquid feed and allow the soil to dry between waterings.
STEP 4 - HARVEST TIME
Start harvesting once your plant is well established (after 2–3 months). Snip stems just above a set of leaves. Harvest little and often to keep the plant tidy and productive.
Top Tip: Thyme leaves can be dried or frozen to enjoy their flavour year-round.
