Perpetual Spinach is a wonderfully reliable leafy green that can provide harvests over a long period. Unlike traditional spinach, it is actually a type of chard and can be picked little and often, allowing the plant to continue producing fresh leaves. Its versatility makes it a useful addition to beds, containers and smaller growing spaces.

Perpetual Spinach
Unlike traditional spinach, which can be tricky to grow and quick to bolt (send up flowers, ending its leafy harvest), perpetual spinach lives up to its name. Once established, it produces a steady supply of tender leaves that you can pick again and again. In fact, with regular harvesting, the plant keeps sending up new leaves, giving you a constant crop that can last nearly a year.
It’s also incredibly low maintenance. Perpetual spinach tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, doesn’t mind cooler temperatures, and is less prone to pests. If you’re new to gardening or simply want a “sure thing” crop, this is a fantastic choice.
HOW TO SOW AND GROW PERPETUAL SPINACH
1. CHOOSE YOUR SPOT
Perpetual spinach grows well in full sun or partial shade. Choose a spot with fertile, moisture-retentive soil that drains well. It can also be grown successfully in containers.
2. PREPARE THE SOIL
Remove any weeds and gently loosen the soil. Add well-rotted compost if your soil needs a boost. Aim for a fine, crumbly surface before sowing.
3. SOW YOUR SEEDS
Make shallow drills around 1–2cm deep. Sow the seeds thinly along the drill, leaving a little space between each seed. Cover lightly with soil and gently water.
4. KEEP THE SOIL MOIST
Water regularly, particularly while the seeds are germinating. Try to keep the soil evenly moist rather than allowing it to dry out completely.
5. THIN THE SEEDLINGS
Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out if they are growing too closely together. This gives each plant enough room to develop strong, healthy leaves.
6. LOOK AFTER YOUR PLANTS
Keep the area around your spinach weed-free and water during dry spells. A mulch of compost around established plants can help retain moisture and provide additional nutrients.
7. START HARVESTING
Once the plants are well established, pick the outer leaves first, leaving the smaller central leaves to continue growing. Regular harvesting encourages the plant to produce more leaves.
8. KEEP IT GROWING
Perpetual spinach is a great cut-and-come-again crop. With regular harvesting and a little care, one sowing can provide a steady supply of leaves over a long growing period.
TOP TIP
Pick a few leaves at a time rather than harvesting the whole plant. This allows your perpetual spinach to keep producing fresh new growth.
