FESTIVE CHARLOTTE POTATOES

There's something truly special about serving potatoes on Christmas Day that you've grown yourself. Festive Charlotte Potatoes are planted during late summer and carefully nurtured through autumn, producing tender, buttery new potatoes ready for lifting during the festive season.

Charlotte is one of the UK's favourite salad potato varieties thanks to its smooth golden skin, creamy yellow flesh and exceptional flavour. It holds its shape beautifully after cooking, making it perfect for roasting, boiling, steaming or serving warm with butter and herbs.

Growing festive potatoes is surprisingly straightforward. They thrive in containers, potato bags, raised beds and vegetable plots, making them suitable for gardens of every size. As temperatures begin to cool, the plants continue developing beneath the soil, building anticipation for one of the most rewarding harvests of the gardening year.

Harvesting your own potatoes just before Christmas adds a unique touch to your festive table and reminds us that gardening truly is a year-round adventure.

HOW TO SOW AND GROW FESTIVE CHARLOTTE POTATOES

Step 1: Chit Your Seed Potatoes

Place your seed potatoes in a cool, bright, frost free position with the rose end facing upwards. Leave them for 2–3 weeks until short, sturdy shoots develop.

Step 2: Prepare Your Container

Choose a large container, grow bag or raised bed with excellent drainage. Fill the base with around 10–15cm of rich, peat free compost.

Step 3: Plant

Place each potato with the shoots facing upwards, spacing them well apart. Cover with approximately 10cm of compost and water thoroughly.

Step 4: Position

Move the container to a sunny, sheltered location where it will receive at least six hours of sunlight each day.

Step 5: Earth Up

As green shoots emerge, continue adding compost around the stems until only the top leaves remain visible. Repeat this throughout the growing period to encourage more potatoes to form.

Step 6: Water and Feed

Keep compost evenly moist but never waterlogged. Feed every couple of weeks with a high potassium fertiliser once plants begin growing strongly.

Step 7: Protect from Frost

As autumn temperatures fall, move containers into a greenhouse, porch or sheltered position, or protect them with horticultural fleece if frost is forecast.

Step 8: Harvest

Around 10–12 weeks after planting, gently check beneath the compost. Harvest your potatoes when they're egg sized for delicious festive new potatoes.
