Planting Pak Choi With The September Monthly Grow Kit | Seed Folk

WHAT’S INSIDE THE SEPTEMBER GROW KIT

WHAT’S INSIDE THE SEPTEMBER MONTHLY GROW KIT?

September brings a fresh rhythm to the garden. Summer is beginning to fade, the evenings are drawing in and cooler days are on the way. While some crops are finishing their season, autumn growing is just getting started.

This month’s Monthly Grow Kit brings together Rainbow Chard, Pak Choi and Radish, a colourful and productive trio selected to help you make the most of the garden as the seasons change.

Pak Choi is a fantastic crop for this time of year. Fast growing and packed with crisp stems and tender green leaves, it brings plenty of fresh flavour to autumn meals. It can be grown in containers, pots or raised beds, making it a great choice whether you have a large garden or just a small growing space.

Alongside Pak Choi, Rainbow Chard adds vibrant colour and dependable harvests, while quick-growing Radishes provide a satisfying crop in a matter of weeks.

Inside every Monthly Grow Kit you’ll find carefully chosen seeds, plant labels and simple growing guides to take you from sowing to harvest. You can also add our organic compost mix, biodegradable pots and recycled plastic saucers.

The seasons may be changing, but there’s still plenty to grow. September is your chance to get your autumn garden started.

PAK CHOI

Pak Choi is a member of the brassica family and is loved for its combination of crisp texture and mild flavour. The pale stems hold plenty of moisture while the green leaves provide a softer texture, making the whole plant useful in the kitchen.

It’s a particularly rewarding crop because you don’t have to wait months for a harvest. Young plants can be harvested relatively quickly, while leaving them longer allows larger heads to develop.

Pak Choi can be grown in containers, raised beds or directly in the garden. Its compact growth habit makes it especially useful when space is limited.

One thing to watch for when growing Pak Choi is stress from dry conditions or sudden changes in temperature, which can encourage plants to bolt. Regular watering and keeping plants growing steadily can help.

Harvest young plants whole or pick individual leaves as required. Either way, you'll have a fresh crop ready to add to autumn meals.

HOW TO SOW AND GROW PAK CHOI

STEP 1: SELECT YOUR GROWING AREA

Choose a sunny or partially shaded position with fertile, moisture retentive soil. Containers work particularly well.

STEP 2: PREPARE THE SOIL

Remove weeds and loosen the soil. Add compost to create a fertile growing environment.

STEP 3: SOW

Sow seeds approximately 1cm deep in rows around 30cm apart. You can also sow into modules or small pots if you want to give seedlings extra protection initially.

STEP 4: WATER GENTLY

Water the seeds carefully and keep the compost or soil consistently moist. Avoid allowing the growing medium to become completely dry.

STEP 5: THIN

Once seedlings have developed a few leaves, thin them to around 20–30cm apart depending on the size of Pak Choi you want to grow.

STEP 6: KEEP GROWING

Water regularly and keep the area around plants free from weeds. Consistent moisture is particularly important during warmer or dry periods.

STEP 7: CHECK FOR PESTS

Keep an eye out for common brassica pests such as slugs, snails and caterpillars. Check the leaves regularly and remove pests where necessary.

STEP 8: HARVEST

Harvest young plants whole or pick individual outer leaves as needed. For larger heads, cut the plant at the base once it has reached a useful size.
