WHAT’S INSIDE THE SEPTEMBER MONTHLY GROW KIT?
September marks the beginning of a new growing season in the garden. As summer crops start to finish and temperatures begin to drop, there are still plenty of opportunities to sow fresh crops for autumn harvests.
This month’s Monthly Grow Kit brings together Rainbow Chard, Pak Choi and Radish, a versatile selection chosen to keep your growing space productive as summer turns to autumn.
Radish is a brilliant choice for September sowing. Quick to grow and wonderfully compact, radishes are ideal for pots, containers, raised beds and smaller gardens. Their crisp texture and peppery flavour make them a rewarding crop, often ready to harvest within just a few weeks.
Every Monthly Grow Kit includes carefully selected seeds, plant labels and easy-to-follow growing guides to help you grow confidently from seed to harvest. You can also customise your kit with our organic compost mix, biodegradable pots and recycled plastic saucers.
As summer draws to a close, there’s no need to put the garden to bed just yet. There are still plenty of delicious crops waiting to be grown.

RADISH
Radish is one of those wonderfully simple crops that makes growing your own food feel instantly rewarding. Fast-growing, compact and full of peppery flavour, radishes are perfect for September sowing and can thrive in pots, containers, raised beds or smaller growing spaces.
Their colourful roots develop quickly beneath the soil, often giving you a harvest in just a few weeks. Sow little and often for a steady supply of crisp, fresh radishes to enjoy in salads, sandwiches, pickles and plenty of autumn dishes.

HOW TO SOW AND GROW RADISH
1. Choose Your Growing Space
Radishes grow well in pots, containers, raised beds or directly in the soil. Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with loose, well-drained soil.
2. Prepare the Soil
Remove any stones or large lumps and gently rake the surface until it is fine and crumbly. Radishes grow best in soil that allows their roots to develop easily.
3. Sow the Seeds
Make shallow drills around 1cm deep. Sow the seeds thinly along the row, leaving a little space between each one.
4. Cover and Water
Cover the seeds lightly with soil and water gently using a fine rose on your watering can. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid making it waterlogged.
5. Thin the Seedlings
Once the seedlings appear, thin them if they are too close together. Leave around 3–5cm between plants, depending on the variety, to allow the roots room to swell.
6. Keep Them Growing
Water regularly, especially during dry spells. Inconsistent watering can lead to small, woody or split radishes, so try to keep moisture levels steady.
7. Sow Successionally
For a continuous harvest, sow a small row every couple of weeks while conditions remain suitable. This gives you fresh radishes rather than one large harvest all at once.
8. Watch for Pests
Keep an eye out for flea beetles, which can leave small holes in the leaves. Keeping plants well-watered and using protective mesh can help reduce damage.
9. Harvest at the Right Time
Radishes are usually ready within 3–6 weeks, depending on the variety and growing conditions. Pull them while they are young and crisp for the best flavour and texture.
10. Enjoy Your Harvest
Wash your radishes and enjoy them sliced into salads, added to sandwiches, pickled or roasted for a sweeter flavour.
