This week we're putting Sage in the spotlight. With its soft, aromatic leaves and distinctive earthy flavour, sage is a wonderful herb to have growing at home. It's perfect for adding depth to roast potatoes, stuffing, pasta, soups and seasonal dishes. As a hardy perennial, sage can become a long-term addition to your garden, providing fresh leaves year after year once established.

SAGE

Sage is a timeless herb that combines beauty with practicality. Its soft grey-green leaves are wonderfully aromatic and bring depth of flavour to roast dinners, stuffing, pasta dishes, roasted vegetables and countless seasonal recipes.

Unlike many herbs, sage is a hardy perennial, meaning one planting can continue producing for years with very little maintenance. It also attracts pollinators when in flower, making it a valuable addition to any wildlife-friendly garden.

Whether grown in containers, herb beds or mixed borders, sage provides reliable harvests throughout the year while adding attractive texture and colour to your garden.

HOW TO SOW AND GROW SAGE

Step 1: Sow Indoors

Fill seed trays or small pots with moist seed compost and sow seeds thinly on the surface. Cover lightly with a fine layer of compost.

Step 2: Provide Warmth

Place in a bright location with temperatures of around 18–21°C. Keep the compost lightly moist during germination.

Step 3: Pot On

When seedlings have developed several true leaves, transplant them into individual pots.

Step 4: Harden Off

Gradually introduce young plants to outdoor conditions over 7–10 days before planting outside.

Step 5: Plant Out

Choose a sunny position with free-draining soil. Space plants around 30–45cm apart.

Step 6: Water Sparingly

Water regularly while plants establish, then only during prolonged dry spells. Sage dislikes sitting in wet soil.

Step 7: Harvest

Pick young leaves whenever needed, taking a few stems from each plant rather than removing too much at once. Light pruning after flowering will help maintain a compact, healthy plant for years to come.
